3 Safest Midsize SUVs for 2022 and 1 to Skip

In the market for a new SUV? These are the safest midsize SUVs for 2022, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). There is one midsize sport utility vehicle that you could probably skip over, as there are better options in the same price range.

When iSeeCars ranked some of the safest midsize SUVs, the 2022 Toyota Highlander came in first. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the 2022 Highlander a five-star safety rating. The Toyota SUV received five-star ratings on important crash tests like the frontal and side crash ratings. Automatic emergency braking and automatic high beams are some of the standard safety technology. Plus, the IIHS gave this SUV the Top Safety Pick Plus award. Toyota’s Highlander SUV has a 16.7% rollover risk.

Honda’s Pilot is another good pick for the safest midsize SUVs

<p>While the Honda Pilot has a bit of a higher starting price, it has plenty to offer.  The cabin is spacious and has room for seven or eight passengers.  Scores from the NHTSA were mainly four and five stars.  In fact, the 2022 Honda Pilot received an overall crash test rating of five stars.  The IIHS gave the pilot mixed reviews, with many good scores mixed with some acceptable scores.  For the rollover risk NHTSA score, the pilot has a 16.8% chance of rolling over. </p>

The 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe only has room for five passengers, but it has high safety scores. The NHTSA confirmed the Hyundai Santa Fe was one of the safest midsize SUVs for 2022 with its five-star rating. Hyundai’s Santa Fe also only has a 15.1% rollover rating, the lowest on the list so far. With its Top Safety Pick Plus pick from the IIHS, the Hyundai SUV has all the safety buyers need.

Buyers can skip the Dodge Durango

<p>Unfortunately, the 2022 Dodge Durango didn’t impress iSeeCars with its safety scores.  It has room for seven passengers and a low starting price, but no noteworthy safety scores.  Experts at the IIHS didn’t have anything positive to report about the 2022 Durango yet.  The NHTSA gave the Dodge SUV a four-star safety rating, with four stars on many of its tests.  Dodge’s Durango has a rollover risk of 20.4%, which is one of the highest percentages on the list. </p>

<p>At this point, the safest midsize SUVs for 2022 are probably about to get replaced by the 2023 versions.  That might mean better deals on the outgoing models if there happens to be a surplus at your local dealership. </p>
