In front of another fully occupied Montrose stadium, the fourth-placed Montrose football team of class 4A faced the second-placed and reigning national champion Durango of 3A. It was also the return of former Montrose head coach Todd Casebier as the Demons head coach.

The Indians won 39-7 to remain undefeated in the young campaign.

“I’m so proud. That was a really good win against a really good team,” said Montrose head coach Brett Mertens. “Our kids played their tails tonight and the results spoke for themselves. We’ll do things a day after take others and try to get better every day. “

Averaging just 11.7 points per game, the Indians (3-0) defense stopped the Demons (2-1) on their first possession to start a scoring drive that ended with Austin Griffin from six yards Distance hit and Montrose took the early lead. The Indians scored again in the second quarter and drove 70 yards in eight games to set up Griffin’s second touchdown of the night.

Durango senior Nate Messier brought the Demons onto the scoreboard in the second quarter with a touchdown run over two yards. A third rousing touchdown from Griffin gave the home team a 21: 7 half-time lead.

Early in the third quarter, Montrose senior Ethan Hartman took the opening kickoff of the second half back 90 yards for a touchdown and Gabe Miller intercepted a pass from Durango quarterback Tyler Harms on the next drive. Griffin and Tayne Ila each added another score to Montrose and the Indians celebrated their third win in as many games.

“I would say we played well but we still have some things to fix,” said Ashden Oberg, Montrose senior.

The Indians will be in stockade on Thursday. The demons travel to Farmington, New Mexico on Friday.

“Montrose was better in every way,” said Casebier. “You played hard. We have a lot to do. They played better and trained better. “
