LAWRENCE, Kan. – After opening the season with three-straight top-five finishes, the NM State women’s golf team will face its toughest test yet with the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational. With nine Power Five opponents in the 15 team field, the Aggies will have a chance to turn heads nationally with a strong performance in Kansas.
Alex Quihuis will make her first appearance in the NM State lineup this year. At the Golf Iconic Classic, Quihuis played as an individual, securing a tie for 32nd place. Quihuis will be the first Aggie to tee off, beginning at 8:40 am CT. Following Quihuis will be NM State’s freshman duo, Kaylee Chen and Emma Bunch. Chen will tee off at 8:48 with Bunch right behind her at 8:56.
Following a career-best showing at the Golf Iconic Classic, Valentina Origel will play the two for NM State in Kansas. Origel tied for sixth in Las Cruces, shooting a team-best 214 (-2). Alison Gastelum maintains her position atop the NM State lineup, teeing off at 9:12. The reigning WAC Golfer of the Month carded her third top-ten finish of the year when she tied for eighth at the Aggies’ home tournament.

Hosted by the University of Kansas, the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational features a loaded field. Joining the Jayhawks and Aggies will be Arizona, Boston College, Brigham Young, Iowa, Kent State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Sam Houston, Tulane, UTSA, Washington State, and Wisconsin.
With the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational being just a two-day event, NM State will play 36-holes of golf on Monday, October 17. The Aggies group will also feature Brigham Young and Boston College, beginning at 8:40 am CT.

Numbers to Know
4 – The trip to Kansas will be NM State’s fourth and final test of the fall season. After Kansas, the Aggies will not be back in action until February 27 in Long Beach, California. The Aggies have finished in the top five of their first three fall showings.
6 – Valentina Origel carded her best career finish in the Aggies’ last tournament. Origel tied for sixth place in the Golf Iconic Classic, hosted in Las Cruces.
280 – NM State fired one of the lowest scores in school history with a 280 in the second round of the Golf Iconic Classic.
89 – The Aggies enter the week at 89th in the Golfweek national rankings. Among teams competing in Kansas, Arizona leads the way, sitting at No. 12.
