Aggies survived in AT | Las Cruces bulletin

Press release of the NMSU Athletics

The New Mexico state women’s soccer team fought rivals UTEP for 95 minutes but fell 2-1 in the battle for the I-10 in El Paso on Thursday night.

NM State (4-2, 0-0 WAC) started strong and put the UTEP backline under pressure. The Aggies managed to break through when Hannah Leitner raced past the Miners and found Bianca Chacon at the head of the box. Chacon, an El Paso native, hit the top 90 for her first career goal.

The Aggies had some good chances, none better than Leitner’s 33rd minute, but their shot sailed just past goal after knocking their defender over the left flank. That was the last good chance for their team and NM State went 1-0 into the break.

UTEP increased the pressure from the break and finally came through in the 73rd minute. NM State failed to score a winning goal late and the two rivals went into overtime, where the Miners scored the golden goal in the 96th minute.

The Aggies are now heading to Sin City to face UNLV on Sunday, September 12th at 2pm (MT). Fans can follow the aggie action via live statistics.
