Albuquerque boxer aiming for another fighting career

ALBUQUERQUE, NM (KRQE) – Matthew “Diamond Boy” Griego is an undefeated boxer who was born, lives and trains in Albuquerque, but after much deliberation, Griego is now taking his talents out of the state in hopes of getting more fighting and recognition.

“I’m frustrated and it’s like taking five steps forward and then ten steps back. I can’t do that anymore, I have to put all my chips in and I have to risk everything and improve my life. I mean, I’ve dreamed of becoming world champion since I was five and time goes by too fast to just sit here and wait, ”said Griego.

Griego has decided to travel to Las Vegas, Nevada to train with his friend and native Rio Rancho Brian Mendoza at Salas Gym. Griego is 11-0 as a pro but his last fight was over a year ago and before that there weren’t any constant fights. It was a tough decision, but after training in Las Vegas, Matthew got the idea to move there. “I went out there and saved one of Salas boys Kazuto Ioka, a four-time world champion, one of the best in the world, who made it. “Said Griego.

Mendoza was a huge motivator for Griego to move to Las Vegas, but Matthew now has even more motivation to improve his career. “I have a little girl on the way. It’s due January 29th and I’m just pushing harder. I don’t fight just for myself anymore. Boxing is what I want to offer and I know I can do it, ”said Griego.

Griego plans to travel to Las Vegas later this month and hopes to train there and maybe even train in California. KRQE Sports will keep you informed about the Diamond Boy.
