Albuquerque is working on the Tijeras watershed

ALBUQUERQUE, NM (KRQE) – The City of Albuquerque works with a number of partners including Bernalillo County and Tijeras Village on the Tijeras Creek Cultural Corridor Plan. It aims to provide more access and education across the Tijeras Arroyo, which plays an important role in bringing water from the mountains to Albuquerque.

“There are just so many things going on in this area and it is really deserved that we elevate this area and tell its story. and in a very comprehensive and thoughtful way, ”said Colleen McRoberts, Superintendent of the CABQ Open Space Division.

McRoberts said there was a deep human history in the Tijeras Arroyo area and a great environmental experience. The corridor plan runs from the Singing Arrow Community Center to Tijeras. While the creek appears dry most of the time, it helps provide Albuquerque with water and preserve wildlife and vegetation during heavy rains and spring thawing snow.

The city’s plan would allow people to get to know the area by creating different stops for people to visit interpretive signs and exhibits. The plan will also bring gentle recovery so people can enjoy the outdoors while protecting the natural resources and wildlife there.

“Right now there are a number of so-called social trails out there. Unofficial ways and often they cause erosion and such. The plan will close many of these social pathways and create a more cohesive system, ”said McRoberts. She said the formal paths would glue the Albuquerque open space along the Arroyo.

The city has conducted surveys to find out what changes people in the region would like. The city and its partners are also holding an open day on Saturday, November 6th, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. This takes place in the Carnué Land Grant Meeting Hall. Mcroberts said once the inputs are gathered, construction on the formal wayheads could begin as early as 2022.
