Resident groups held a rally at Civic Plaza to raise awareness of gun violence. “Everyone is just fed up with the violence. It’s time to drop your guns. It’s time to raise your dukes. Lay down your guns,” Josh Perez, an event organizer, said. After a string of shootings in Albuquerque, people say enough is enough. “We want to show unity and bring this whole town out to show our support,” said Malcolm Shelby, another promoter. The rally titled “Bringing the City Together” did just that. Community leaders, activists and athletes from the hometown gathered on the stage and discussed the issue. Families and friends of victims of gun violence were also in attendance, such as those who knew Bennie Hargrove, a student who was killed at Washington Middle School on August 13. Barelas, Hargrove boxing coach, said. The family of Lawrence Anzures, a man who was killed outside the Ojos Locos Cantina on August 12, was also there. “It’s been wonderful to be here since it started,” said Velarie Anzures, a cousin of Lawrence. De-Barelas says the event is not just about Hargrove and Anzures, it’s about the entire community. “I’m a raider, a Washington junior high raider. A child who is killed in my school and in my community is very important that we have to stop the violence. No more guns, “said De-Barelas lost and the security of future generations.” I am Lawrence’s voice now. My goal is to make his name shine even more and hopefully to help another family so they don’t have to go through what we’re going through.
