Ledes from the Land of Enchantment

Albuquerque small business Signature Sweets and Flowers collapsed

ALBUQUERQUE, NM (KRQE) – Another small business was robbed in the early hours of the morning and surveillance footage shows the thief in action.

Lisa Velarde owns Signature Sweets & Flowers in Albuquerque. She was in the same location on Coors Blvd. for 16 years. She says she loves her shop, but she keeps encountering a problem. It keeps getting broken into. “Four or five times already,” says Velarde.

The last burglary happened at 2:30 a.m. on Sunday morning. Velarde’s security cameras caught a thief poking around her shop and stealing valuables. “They came through one of the back doors and made a mess. They broke a lot of things,” says Velarde. “We have cameras, we have alarm systems, what else can we do?”

The store’s van, printer, phones and tools were taken away. The business owner says it’s difficult to know how much financial damage has been done. The flower shop stayed open during the pandemic and became essential due to the increase in funerals. But when something like that happens, it’s still a major setback. “It’s hard when they do this to you.”

She says crime has gotten so bad in the city that it’s almost impossible to prevent these things from happening. “If they do, they will, and there’s nothing you can really do about it.”

However, Velarde is trying to stay positive. She tells KRQE News 13 that this latest break-in won’t stop her store from getting ready for Valentine’s Day. A police report was filed and the Albuquerque Police Department is investigating.
