Ledes from the Land of Enchantment

Albuquerque woman calls 911 three times and says no one answered

It was Monday morning at Four Hills Mobile Home Park when a local resident who wanted to remain anonymous saw the community’s 88-year-old lifeguard was attacked by six teenagers.

“They just started pushing and pushing him,” she said. “They tried to climb back over the fence so he went to the fence and they grabbed him by the fence and beat him.”

Concerned for his life, she called 911, but got angry when no one answered.

“The doorbell rang and then it was just dead. So I tried again,” she said.

She said she called three times with no luck.

“It was a terrible feeling not being able to reach someone because that’s supposed to be your lifeline.”

A RV park manager said they called the emergency number for 30 minutes before someone answered, and then two hours later the police arrived and the teenagers escaped.

“We have had problems with 911 in the city before and it needs to be fixed,” said the witness.

A troubling problem small shop owner Carol Johnson is familiar with.

“To the point where a lot of us don’t call anymore, that’s why we got everything locked up like that.”

Her shop, Celeste Gift and Novelties, has been broken into several times and she claimed the police never investigated what led them to take their own precautions. Also, when a video of a man shoplifting was shown to KOB 4, it became another crime that she said had not been investigated.

“It’s not a lot of money in here, but that’s how I make a living and I would really appreciate a little more police reaction,” said Johnson.

KOB 4 reached out to Albuquerque Police Department for comment on those people who have been put on hold or unable to speak to an operator when they call 911. They said they would look into this.
