AQUATOMICS NEWS RELEASE

Thirty three members of the Los Alamos Aquatomics participated in the Beast Short-Course Kickoff swim meet in Santa Fe, September 24. We were the second largest team in attendance, and 8 of our swimmers were participating in an USA Swimming meet for the first time.

The last couple years, our training, meet participation, and membership numbers took a bit of a beating as a result of the pandemic, and the biggest assets demonstrated by swimmers and parents alike has been flexibility, resiliency, adaptability and patience. We are just beginning our recovery, both as a team, and nationwide for the sport. If the results from our recruiting, and this meet are any indications, our future looks bright.

Recap and highlights by group from the meet:

Coach Danielle (Age Group):

There were 13 swimmers who competed from the Age Group at the meet this weekend: Leif, Zooey, Max, Alexandra, Jane, Lucy, Ruby, Joshua, Isaac, Alex, Shae, Miles, and Peter. Every athlete swam in 4 events, and everyone got at least one personal best time! We had several swimmers race in events they have never competed in before, so it was great to see them obtain times for those new events. There were lots of time improvements across the board, and we saw the most personal bests in the 50 free and 100 free. Congratulations to the swimmers on their first meet of the new season!

Coach Sean (Novice):

The new swimmers all did great. Ben has been working very hard, and did fantastic. His dives were great! Elan got overwhelmed in warm up, but then rallied and swam well throughout the meet. I think my favorite surprise was watching Alex get a 1:29 in the 100 free, followed up a couple minutes later with Isaac going a 1:24.

Coach Anna Nowell (Challenge group):

We had three swimmers from the Challenge group: McKenzie, Owen and Hannah. Each swam 4 events, in total they had 11 out of 12 best times. This is a great way to start the season!!! We had been working on breaststroke and their hard work showed at the meet. Owen dropped close to 5 seconds in the 100 breaststroke. Hannah dropped over 2 seconds in the 100 and McKenzie dropped over a second in a 50. I’m really excited to see what the new season brings.

Head Coach Mark Scott (Junior and Senior Groups):

Despite racing on only a couple weeks of training, we had some surprisingly good swims, and outstanding efforts. Cindy Fu had a personal best in the 100 breaststroke by over 4 seconds, Madeleine had 4 best times out of 4 events including 14 seconds in a 50 breaststroke and a great 200 free dropping over 6 seconds, both Nikolai and Fayrouz had fearless swims taking their 200’s out fast – we can’t wait to see them finish fearlessly too after more time in the water. Everyone had great strokes and effort!!

Meet Highlight Reel:

The highlight video for this meet was earned by Daniel Borovino, who simply crushed his old PBs, made it look easy, with significant stroke, turns, underwaters. Daniel’s hard work during the LC Season came back to him big time.

Aquatomics Results, Daniel France Memorial Meet, Las Cruces

Recap by Head Coach Scott:

Four members of the LAA Senior Group, Hayden Sutton, Madalyn Baily, Gracie Nowell, and Sam Nowell headed south to Las Cruces Sept 30 thru Oct 2 and competed in the Pecan Classic Swim Meet. The meet took place after only 3 weeks of training, we’ve been dealing with some illness as well, and did not back off hard training at all. This didn’t seem to matter much!

The first day of the meet set the pace with PB’s (Personal Bests) in all three events, with Madalyn’s time in the 1650 being a huge drop, over a minute. ALL our swims had major improvements in some way, with major improvements in strokes, turns, underwaters and pace being displayed by all.

Hayden’s swims were solid for early season, good efforts throughout, and bodes well for the rest of his season. Grace scored 30 points in 9/10 events, with PBs in 10/10 events. Sam scored in 10/10 events and had PBs in 10/10 events as well, with a particularly nice looking 100 Fly.

Madalyn was looking sharp in her last couple meets during the Long Course (LC) Season, and continued this trend all weekend, with major drops in everything, scoring in 5/7 events, and finished up the meet in a great race, with a Monster drop in the 200 Free.

Well done Aquatomics!!
