Assessor candidate placed on administrative leave from Doña Ana County

LAS CRUCES – A candidate for county assessor has been placed on administrative leave, but it’s unclear why.

Daniel Sambrano, a Democrat running for Doña Ana County Assessor, has been placed on administrative leave, county spokesperson Anita Skipper told the Sun-News. Skipper said she couldn’t confirm any more details, including why Sambrano had been placed on leave.

Sambrano works as a senior appraiser in the Doña Ana County Assessor’s Office. He told the Sun-News Friday he couldn’t talk about the reasons for his leave but said it began Thursday. He also said he didn’t know when he would return to work.

From left, democrats Gina Ortega, Ruben Reyes, and Daniel Sambrano debate during the Picacho Hills County Club forum on May 17, 2022. The three candidates are running to become the next Doña Ana County Accessor.

In an interview with the Sun-News about his candidacy in April, Sambrano said he would increase education and training to office staff, implement an online notice of value system, increase office transparency and improve relations between the office and the public if elected.

Early voting for the Democratic primary ends Saturday. Election Day is June 7. Sambrano is running against Ruben Reyes, a former assessor’s office employee, and bakery owner Gina Ortega in the primary.
