Awards recognize nurses at Memorial Medical Center

Bulletin report

Two Memorial Medical Center (MMC) nurses were recently honored with awards recognizing their exceptional work, MMC said in a press release.

Angelina Holguin, Nurse in Telemetry, and Rhiamie McMurray, Nurse in the MMC Observation Unit, received the DAISY Award for Outstanding Nurses. The award is part of the Daisy Foundation’s mission to “recognize the exceptional, compassionate care caregivers provide to patients and families every day.”

Holguin and McMurray were nominated for the award by MMC patients and family members. They were recognized for their services in the second quarter of 2021, MMC said.

“Angie was just extraordinary,” wrote the husband of a patient in her nomination for Holguin, according to a press release. “She particularly accepted me and made me involved with my same-sex husband. (The patient) required fairly intensive care because of his Parkinson’s disease. She spent a lot of time taking care of him and really took care of him. Please commend Angie for her exceptional attitude and care. “

“She’s the best nurse I’ve ever had; she looked after me so well, ”one patient wrote of McMurray’s compassion, said MMC. “She came and fixed my pillow, straightened my bed and saw that I was comfortable. She really deserves to be a nurse. She would come right away when I needed her. She deserves something special. “

The DAISY Foundation is a not-for-profit foundation established by members of his family in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Barnes died in 1999 at the age of 33 of complications from idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, a little-known but not uncommon autoimmune disease. DAISY is the abbreviation for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. The care that nurses provided to Barnes and his family during his illness inspired this unique opportunity to thank the nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families, the MMC press release said.

“We are proud to continue to recognize the hard work of our caregivers by participating in the DAISY program,” said Caryn Iverson, chief nursing officer at MMC. “Recognition and celebration mean more now than ever as caregivers address the challenges of Covid-19 in addition to their usual roles.”

The DAISY award winners are selected by an MMC committee. Each winner receives a certificate praising them as an “exceptional nurse”, a DAISY Award pin and a sculpture called “A Healer’s Touch”, which was hand-carved by artists from the Shona tribe in Zimbabwe.
