Black Pumas up for two Grammy Awards this weekend

LAS CRUCES – The 64th annual Grammy Awards are coming up this weekend, and Austin-based band Black Pumas are up for awards in two categories.

The 2022 awards show will take place April 3 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and aired live at 6 pm MT on CBS and streamed live on Paramount+. It was originally to be held Jan. 31 but was postponed due to increased numbers of the COVID-19 omicron variant.

The psychedelic soul group has ties to New Mexico through member Eric Burton. The singer/songwriter grew up in Alamogordo and attended New Mexico State University’s main campus in Las Cruces. Guitarist/producer Adrian Quesada is the other member of the duo.

Eric Burton of Black Pumas performs during Day Two of the 2022 Innings Festival at Tempe Beach Park.

Black Pumas are nominated twice in the Rock genre category for Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Album. They are nominated alongside AC/DC, Deftones, Foo Fighters and Paul McCartney. This brings their total number of Grammy nominations to six.
