Bulletin report

Bureau of Land Management Artist in Residence Native American jazz trumpeter Delbert Anderson and his group D’DAT are headed home to New Mexico to teach music workshops and perform in concert to celebrate America’s public lands, the US Bureau of Land Management said in a news release .

As the finale of the five-stop Painted Mountains Tour, Anderson and D’DAT will hold a musical workshop at 11 am Saturday, July 8 at Dripping Springs Natural Area La Cueva Group Site, 15000 Dripping Springs Road east of Las Cruces. Anderson will work directly with students of all ages developing a basic musical framework. Then, at 7 pm Sunday, July 9, Anderson and D’DAT will perform a free public concert at Centennial High School, 1950 S. Sonoma Ranch Blvd.

“Anderson takes inspiration from original Navajo spinning songs to produce a completely different sound that combines Native American rhythms and melodies with jazz, funk, and hip-hop,” the news release said.

Anderson, a faculty member at San Juan College in Farmington, “bases his music on traditional spinning songs from Native Americans,” BLM said. “Historically, Navajo spinning songs have been a way for Diné to compose new pieces reflecting the present moment. Traditionally passed from generation to generation, spinning songs grew with the times and are still present today.

BLM is sponsoring the Painted Mountains Tour as part of the artist in residence program.

“The tour and residency closely aligns with Interior’s priority to strengthen the government-to-government relationship with sovereign tribal nations,” BLM said.

BLM manages approximately 245 million acres of public land located primarily in 12 western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation.
