Breeders’ Cup planning well under way at Del Mar

Even before the 82nd Del Mar summer season ended on Monday, the circuit and Breeders’ Cup officials were already planning the return of the premier racing event from November 5th to 6th.

“We had weekly planning meetings during the summer meeting,” said Josh Rubinstein, president and chief operating officer of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, on Monday morning.

“Today we started building the quarantine stables for the strange horses. The construction of the company chalets begins on October 4th. There isn’t much to do on the tracks. The main track is rebalanced. The lawn regenerates itself. “

In July, a total of 25,000 reserved grandstand and chalet seats for the Breeders’ Cup went on sale. Standing and indoor spaces will be offered at a later date.

When Del Mar first hosted the event in 2017, 70 percent of tickets were sold outside the area. However, with international travel still facing COVID-19 restrictions, more tickets are being allocated to the region.

“We’re offering premium tickets to local fans, including the Turf Club,” said Rubinstein. “The sales were very strong.”

Tickets are available at Breederscup.com/tickets or by calling 877-849-4287.

Rubinstein said that attendance will again be capped at 37,500 per day, as was the case in 2017 when the event sold out.

“Setting this limit allows us to maximize the experience for each fan based on the facility’s infrastructure and staff,” said Rubinstein. “We had such a great experience in 2017. …

“We want to present Del Mar as we did in 2017. We have some amenities that other routes don’t: luxury suites and route boxes … plus the climate, hotels and restaurants. “

Post positions will be drawn on November 1st. Participants must be at the site 72 hours before November 5th.

Other events during the Breeders’ Cup week are:

Breeders’ Cup Preview Party (public) November 3rd at the Del Mar Plaza;

“Jocktails” (charity event with jockeys who serve as prominent bartenders) on November 3rd;

Breeders’ Cup golf tournament on November 4th at the Del Mar Country Club.
