ALBUQUERQUE, NM (KRQE) – Due to wind, the dawn patrol was canceled and the yellow flag was hoisted this morning. Officials at the pilots briefing said that if balloons ended up flying, there would be only one balloon wave instead of two. Balloon officers continued to monitor the winds throughout the morning and some balloons were inflated.
The weather has become increasingly important to the event over the past few days as the Saturday morning mass ascent turned into a static display and the balloon glow turned into candlelight on Saturday evening. We have a deep depression right over the state this morning. This affects our weather in several ways. First, it creates a lot of lift for the air, which gives way to strong unpredictable winds at altitude. Unfortunately, that doesn’t bode well for the last day of the balloon fiesta. It also draws colder air from the Rockies into our state.
