Bulldogs beat Santa Fe Christian to win Division III water polo title

Senior goalie Jackson Bradley and his Ramona teammates couldn’t wait to get started.

The fourth-seeded Bulldogs scored the first two goals and built a four-goal lead in the first quarter on the way to a 13-6 victory Saturday over Santa Fe Christian for their second title in three seasons.

For his part, Bradley opened with three strong saves and also had two outlet passes for assists in helping build a 5-1 edge.

“We had an idea that we wanted to start very well and as soon as we did, the momentum just kept on building,” said Bradley, who finished with 10 saves. “Then we got very excited.”

The Bulldogs, who went 3-3 in the Valley League, won the Division III CIF title Saturday in a 13-6 game against Santa Fe Christian.

Sophomore Steve Tucker scored five goals, including two in the first quarter, while classmate Brady Bailey added four for Ramona (15-13).

“It’s all amazing,” Tucker said. “Just coming in and thinking about winning gave us motivation to start off really strong.”

Emmanuel Contreras and Max Pagan each had two goals to spearhead the No. 2 Eagles (17-12), who were seeking their first title in their first final since 2017.

Both schools moved down from D-II this season.

Ramona, under coach Donnie Williams since 2007, ousted no. 1 Mira Mesa 15-5 in the semifinals.

“Once the (playoffs) started, we really showed up,” said Tucker, a reserve on the last title team. “There’s more seriousness to it since if we lose, we’re out.”

The Bulldogs went 3-3 in the Valley League.
