Carlsbad sports season heating up for football, soccer

It was a very busy weekend in Carlsbad, while Carlsbad’s sports teams were busy on the road. Carlsbad’s varsity football team moved up to 1-1, following a 35-28 win over Goddard. The Cavemen will host Volcano Vista on Friday at 7 pm

Carlsbad’s girls soccer tied Centennial over the weekend, but picked up wins over Mayfield and Chaparral in tournament play at Las Cruces. The cave girls are now 2-0-1. The Cavemen soccer team is off to an impressive 3-2 record, which included a 3-2 win over Mayfield and a 2-1 over Roswell High. Carlsbad’s volleyball team is now 0-3.

Everyone who stayed in Carlsbad was also treated to a busy weekend, which featured the Firefighter Combat Challenge downtown. In addition to the competition itself, the event also included several band performances, vendors and an awards ceremony. After the formal competition, Carlsbad’s current and former combat challenge teams squared off. Congratulations to Carlsbad MainStreet and the Carlsbad Fire Department on a successful event.

On Sunday, members of the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Committee celebrated the 59th anniversary of Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech by playing the speech. Carlsbad’s Big Lots held its grand opening on Saturday as well. We enjoyed getting to welcome Big Lots to Carlsbad and meet with many of the store’s employees.

Of course, on Friday, the City celebrated its opening of the new Alejandro Ruiz Senior Center. This included a wonderful speech by Celia Ruiz, the daughter of the Congressional Medal of Honor recipient. Thank you to everyone who worked hard at this senior center, and special thanks to Valerie Murrill for donating flowers to the celebration.

Coming up this week, our summer concert series will resume on Saturday, from 7-9 pm, with DJ Malory Anaya. Creative Carlsbad and the Carlsbad Museum will be hosting a movie in the park on Friday. This week’s movie “Selena” will begin at about 7:15 pm There’s also a lot of local music in town this week at private locations, including several Labor Day performances at the Shade by Chet Johnson, the Old Friends Band and Dale Mayfield.

As mentioned in the past, Carlsbad native Sonny Throckmorton recently received the special “poet’s award” at the ACM Honors. It’s a very exclusive award, and country artist Shania Twain also received the honor this year. Artist Carly Pearce is hosting the awards, and you’ll be able to watch it directly on Fox on Sept 13.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
