CBP officials have arrested 34 refugees since early 2022

El Paso, Texas – U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials across the El Paso, west Texas and southern New Mexico area have arrested 34 refugees from justice since the start of the new year. Some major arrests included serious sexual assault on a child, second degree murder, sexual exploitation of a minor, kidnapping of a minor, indecency towards a child, and indecent acts on a child.

“Homeland security is our primary responsibility and every time a CBP officer identifies and arrests someone who is wanted by law enforcement, it makes our communities a little safer,” said Hector Mancha, director of field operations at CBP El Paso. “The vast majority of travelers CBP officers encounter pose no risk, but it is important that we identify and stop those who do.”

On January 4, a 21-year-old male lawful permanent resident presented himself via a pedestrian for inspection at the America Crossing Bridge. System inquiries revealed a positive arrest warrant from the Presidio County, Texas Sheriff’s Office for grievously assaulting a child.

On January 7, CBP officers arrested a 38-year-old male US citizen at the Paso Del Norte crossing point who was wanted for second degree murder from the Jefferson Parish, Louisianan Sheriff’s Office.

On January 8, a 19-year-old legal permanent resident applied for entry into the United States from Mexico at the Paso Del Norte border crossing. System inquiries by a CBP officer revealed a warrant from the Las Cruces, New Mexico Police Department for the sexual exploitation of a minor.

On January 9, a 26-year-old US citizen presented himself for inspection at the Paso Del Norte border crossing. System inquiries by CBP officers revealed a child kidnapping arrest warrant from the Cumberland County, North Carolina Sheriff’s office. Later that day, at the Port of Presidio Texas, CBP officers encountered a 44-year-old male legal permanent resident with an active warrant for sex offenses against a child from the Ector County, Odessa Texas Sheriff’s office.

On January 11, CBP officers arrested a 36-year-old male Mexican national at the Ysleta crossing on January 11, on whom a pending warrant was issued for indecency in a child and illegal sex in six cases in the San Mateo district, California sheriff’s office.

In addition, 28 other arrests were made for crimes such as vehicle theft, sexual assault, money laundering, robbery, dangerous drugs and international sports doping and conspiracies.

All subjects were arrested by CBP officials and turned over to federal / state agencies to face charges.
