About pumpkins

Most pumpkins are orange because they contain organic pigments called carotenoids. You can also find white, red, yellow, green, and blue pumpkins.

The name probably comes from a French explorer, Jacques Cartier (1491-1557), who called them pepons, a Greek word meaning “big melons” which became the word pumpkin. The fairy tale “Cinderella” made pumpkins popular, and there is even a variety of Cinderella pumpkin.

Americans apparently carved turnips before the Irish brought pumpkins to the United States.
