Cranksgiving Pedal-Powered Food Drive In Santa Fe Nov. 12

CRANKSGIVING News:

SANTA FE — Last year was Santa Fe’s biggest cranksgiving yet, with riders donating the equivalent of 5.5 tons of food to The Food Depot! For 2023, organizers hope to top those results and have issued a public call for MORE TURKEYS.

Saturday Nov. 12 cyclists of all ages and abilities will gather in the railyard under the Water Tower, for the start of the prestigious 14th Annual Cranksgiving in Santa Fe. Also on that day, the Oscar Meyer Wienermobile will be joining us the railyard. Visitors will be able to tour this unique car and one lucky Cranksgiving participant will even get to take a ride in this unusual iconic vehicle.

To participate in Cranksgiving, individual riders and teams are provided with a list of non-perishable food items and go in search of the ingredients that make up a Thanksgiving dinner at local grocery and convenience stores. Hilarity ensures as bike riders with helmets and bags scramble to see who can complete their appointed holiday food shopping in the time allotted.

“We have so much fun with this event,” says Bill Lane, an organizer who works for national bicycle parts distributor BTI. “It started as a race, but we downplay that aspect, awarding riders made up points and final scores that often go into the negative!”

“During a month that is traditionally fraught with the stress of the start of the consumerist season, it’s awesome to be able to spread a little happiness to the beneficiaries of the Food Depot and within the local bike community,” the organizers said.

The growing list of sponsors for this year’s event includes BTI, Baywa.re (solar), the Pedal Queens, Atalaya Outfitters, the Santa Fe Area Homebuilders Association, and all three area Albertson’s Markets,
