First bike packing summit to be held in Las Cruces next month

The very first New Mexico Bike Packing Summit will take place in Las Cruces on Friday, October 22nd, 2021.

Titled “Origins and Connections,” the summit hopes to bring together outdoor enthusiasts locally, across the state and outside of the state, to discuss how the state’s four top bike pack routes will be connected and how those routes will be promoted in some way can that supports inclusivity and equity.

The summit begins with a New Mexico Makers / Meet and Greet session from 8:30 am to 12:00 pm at Outdoor Adventures, 1424 Missouri Ave. The session will attend New Mexico-based manufacturers and retailers focused on cycling or outdoor recreational equipment.

After a lunch break, the summit will continue from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in Klein Park, 155 N Mesquite St, with three panels of speakers

  • State Representative Angelica Rubio will host a discussion with recipients of the New Mexico Outdoor Equity Fund, the first of its kind in the United States
  • Axie Navas, director of the New Mexico Outdoor Recreation Division, will discuss the past two years since the division’s inception and next steps for the New Mexico outdoor recreation economy.
  • Bailey Newberry, owner of Sincere Bicycles in Santa Fe and an expert on bicycle packaging networks in New Mexico, will speak about his recent journey across the continental divide and share stories about the network and its future.

Pablo Lopez, co-founder of Monumental Loop and manager of Outdoor Adventures, a supporter of the event, said, “The trail network has been around for a long time, but next month’s Bikepacking Summit is doing the work that many of us have been doing worth it. I want people to come together to celebrate the achievements we have made, but also to discuss what the future holds, especially for local access to our nature. “
