Ledes from the Land of Enchantment

Gibbons, Gibbons and More Gibbons

The SF Teaching Zoo welcomed a new white-handed gibbon earlier this year.

November 5, 2021 – On July 18, 2021, the zookeepers at Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo found a fantastic surprise on their afternoon routine. Cajun, the white-handed gibbon, carried an adorable toddler in her arms.

Over the past decade, staff, zookeepers, and guests have excitedly watched the gibbon family grow. You’ve seen Eddie and Cajun’s son Rainer grow from baby to adult, ready to start his own family with a buddy across the state in California. Like clockwork, the zoo welcomed a new family member every two to three years. Last year the couple had their first blonde baby, Cusa. The arrival of the new baby less than a year later was a pleasant surprise. While Gibbons occasionally breastfeed two young offspring at the same time, it was a first for Cajun. With four children swinging, these parents certainly have their hands full, but as usual they deal with this new development with grace and patience.

Guests and carers cannot resist visiting the family and watching the goings on. It is fascinating to watch their effortless movements through the bamboo. Come and see for yourself! The SF educational zoo is open daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
