Goehman, Walker lead Pilot Grove past Santa Fe, 53-47 – Boonville Daily News

Logan Goehman had 16 points and Beau Walker chipped in 13 points as the Pilot Grove boys’ basketball team rallied past Santa Fe Monday night in Pilot Grove 53-47.

The Tigers, 6-9 on the season, trailed Santa Fe after the first two periods 13-11 and 31-28 before rallying back with a 18-6 scoring edge in the third quarter to go up 46-37. Meanwhile, in the final period, Santa Fe made it interesting by outscoring the Tigers 10-7 to cut the lead back to six.

“Good win for the Tigers tonight,” said Pilot Grove coach Casey Victim. “I thought we did a good job of running our offense and creating good looks. It was a slow start for us on shots falling, but we eventually got it going. I feel if we can improve our physicality, continue to adjust well, and continue to improve as individual talents, we will continue to get more wins. We look forward to taking the good from this game and applying it the rest of the season.”

Hayden Sleeper and Connor Rhorer each had eight points in the game while Weston Rentel chipped in six and Adam Young with two.

For Santa Fe, Landon Hostetter had 20 points and Reid Monsees with 13.

As for the Pilot Grove girls, they fell to Santa Fe 56-52.

The Lady Tigers, dropping to 12-3 on the season, trailed Santa Fe 17-12 after first period’s end before rallying back with a 17-10 advantage in the second quarter to lead 29-27 at the half. Santa Fe also outscored the Lady Tigers 12-11 in the third quarter but still trailed in the game by one at 40-39. Meanwhile, in the final period, the Lady Chiefs held a 17-12 scoring edge to win the game by four.

Pilot Grove coach Grant Fricke said it was a great game. “Back and forth, lead changes, momentum swings for each side, exciting basketball,” Fricke said. “Definitely some things we wish we could take back and do over within the game, but we have to learn from the mistakes and move on. There was some controversy with possibly stepping on the court on an inbounds play, I took an ill-timed last timeout trying to save a possession not seeing the leak out for a layup opportunity, and then free throws. This game had it all. All sorts of emotions on this rollercoaster of a night as we find ourselves up, down, up, and back down again. At the end of the day our biggest challenge is going to be able to play defense without fouling. We fouled 24 times, leading to Santa Fe going 23-36 from the free throw line. We had 11 fouls in the first half leading to 18 free throw opportunities for Santa Fe, they hit 11 of them. Eleven of their 27 points at the half came off of free throws. That’s just entirely too many. We will definitely be focusing on cleaning up the defensive end of the ball. Marci Lammers had a game high 25 points, tying her season-high output she had in the third place game in the New Franklin tournament versus Sweet Springs. Emma Sleeper was in double figures tonight with 14 before ultimately fouling out. Tough loss at home tonight, but we can’t hang our heads. We get the opportunity to go to New Franklin tomorrow night and play our regular season conference game versus them after losing 54-47 in their home tournament. On to the next one.”

Jasmine Russel led four players in double figures for Santa Fe with 16 points. Kam Dankbring chipped in 13 while Molly Malter and Ava Schmidt added 10 points each.

For Pilot Grove, Marci Lammers finished the game with 25 while Emma Sleeper added 14, Brooke Lorenz and Claire Rentel five each and Grace Peterson with three points.
