A historic and colorful locomotive is now on display at Union Station. Santa Fe 5704 is a locomotive painted red, white and blue for America’s bicentennial in 1976. It was set to be scrapped in 2020 after more than four decades hauling freight, but it ended up being donated to the Southern California Railway Museum.A company in Kansas City recently restored the locomotive. “The first thing is, ‘Oh, wow’ because it’s really big and colorful,” said Stephen Priest, who rescued the locomotive. “It’s amazing how many people remember seeing these or, ‘I remember in grade school.’ There’s a lot of that reminiscing going on from folks when they see it.”This is the only Santa Fe locomotive left that is painted red, white and blue. It will be on display at Union Station through Sunday.
