Jemerrio Jones signs with Lakers and will become third NMSU Aggie in the NBA in 2021

LAS CRUCES – Former New Mexico state men’s basketball striker Jemerrio Jones has signed with the Los Angeles Lakers, according to a report by The Athletic’s Shams Charania. He is now the third former Aggie to be on an NBA roster in 2021.

The Lakers signed Jones, who currently plays for the G League Wisconsin Herd, for a 10-day waiver after playing six games for the Lakers in 2018-19, Charania said. Jones joins former Aggies Pascal Siakam of the Toronto Raptors and Trevelin Queen of the Houston Rockets.

Jones’ signing brings three former Aggies to the NBA at the same time for the second time in program history. Charlie Criss, John Williamson and Sam Lacey’s NBA careers overlapped in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Queen signed a two-way deal with the Rockets earlier this week after playing for the G League Rio Grande Valley Vipers earlier this season. He made his NBA debut against the Pistons on Saturday after playing with the Lakers’ NBA Summer League team but not being accepted into the regular season squad.

Jones averaged 4.5 points in 23.8 minutes in six games with the Lakers in 2018/19. He has averaged 6.5 points and 8.4 rebounds per game in 11 games that season with the Herd this season and has started 58 of his 112 career G League games. In his four-year career in the G League, he averaged 9.3 points and 10.2 rebounds per game.
