Joseph Deveney Obituary (2022) – Albuquerque, NM

Joseph Edward Deveney

Joseph Edward Deveney, 89, left his mortal life June 2, 2022, at home in the arms of his wife and daughter as his son sang “Amazing Grace.”

He was an extraordinary human being incredibly deeply loved by his family. His wife of 61 years, Marion Marks Deveney, loved him as soon as she saw him standing by singing a piano at the Coronado Club on Kirtland Air Force Base, and she will love him forever. His daughter, KayLynn Deveney, idolized and fiercely loved her Daddy Joe, who was her lifelong champion and hero. And Joe’s son, James Edward Deveney (Jimmy), has grown to be the literal reflection of his dad, carrying forth his physical image, his mechanical mind and his upstanding constitution.

Joe had an ingenious mind and a capability to visualize construction and solution. Born in Philadelphia, PA, Joe came to Albuquerque in 1957 to work as a mechanical engineer at Sandia National Laboratories. For nearly 40 years his work kept him engaged and excited as he took on a wide variety of projects. He held patents and contributed to designs that were sent into space and developed to safeguard the nation.

He was very proud to be the son of Irish parents, to be from Philadelphia and to be a Korean War veteran.

Joe advised his family to think about things, be happy and never look for the bad.

In recent years Joe overcame serious medical obstacles and defied all expectation because he loved life so much. There will never be a husband or father who will be missed more.

In addition to Marion, KayLynn and James, Joe is survived by his son-in-law, Will Reichard, James’s partner, Katie Christianson, Joe’s sisters Kathleen Kelly and Mary McFadden of Pennsylvania, his sister-in-law Lela Marks of Rio Rancho , his niece Susan Miller and her husband, Bobby, of Pie Town, New Mexico, and many, many nieces, nephews and cousins in Pennsylvania, Kansas, California, Texas and Ireland.
