A teacher at a charter school in Las Cruces is New Mexico’s Teacher of the Year 2022, according to the New Mexico State Department of Education.

Lorynn Guerrero, an English language teacher at New America School-Las Cruces, was announced as the winner on Friday and will now represent New Mexico in the national competition.

“It is amazing to see that I received the New Mexico Teacher of the Year 2022 because I think all teachers in New Mexico are doing a great job, so I am very honored to be selected,” said Guerrero in one Press release.

In addition to the title, Guerrero will receive $ 25,000 in support and development opportunities from the competition sponsor, the New Mexico Oil and Gas Association.

Guerrero, a second generation educator, grew up in Las Cruces and began her career teaching middle and high school students in Hatch in 2006.

“MS. Guerrero’s commitment to her teenage students at Las Cruces has been extraordinary,” said PED Secretary Kurt Steinhaus in a press release.

Guerrero herself was a teenage mother and credits her high school’s graduation reality and dual skills program for keeping it “on track”.

In 2020, she brought the GRADS program to her school with the opening of the daycare center in August.

In addition, Guerrero prepares students for college or careers as a 12th grade teacher.

“My main goal for them is to be able to support themselves and their future families with a career that they love. It doesn’t have to be college focused, but every job requires additional education and training, ”Guerrera said in the press release.

Guerrero has a bachelor’s degree in secondary education from New Mexico State University and is working on her master’s degree in educational administration.
