Las Cruces man arrested in Brewster Co. after attempting to smuggle 67 undocumented migrants

67 undocumented migrants were hidden inside the truck, including four children and three people with previous serious crimes.

BREWSTER COUNTY, Texas – A Las Cruces man is in jail after the Justice Department announced that border police arrested him for trafficking in human beings.

According to a press release, Javier Duarte, 22, was driving a panel van through the Highway 118 checkpoint when he was referred for a second inspection.

67 undocumented migrants were hidden inside the truck, including four children and three people with previous serious crimes.

Duarte is charged on charges of transporting foreigners and a charge of assisting or assisting foreigners to enter the country who were previously convicted of a serious crime.

If Duarte is convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison in both cases, according to the DOJ.

Border Patrol and Homeland Security Investigations are still investigating the case and no further information is currently available.
