Las Cruces Utilities Shipping: Call answered 24/7

If a rotten egg smell occurs from inside or outside your home, it is likely a gas leak and the next thing to do is call the 24/7 Las Cruces Utilities Dispatch line at 575-526-0500 immediately.

The LCU Emergency Response Team notifies and dispatches emergency teams to all of their calls within 15 minutes. The team has resources to help resolve any issue from a broken water pipe to notifying customers of a water or gas failure. In 2021, the ERT managed an average of 183 telephone and radio calls per day.

LCU dispatcher Eric Weise explained that they receive calls ranging from questions about water pressure or discolored water to inquiries about re-ignition of gas heaters, which LCU makes free of charge. LCU Dispatch receives calls for situations that can be really dangerous for a local resident or a company, such as a gas leak from a meter or a main water main flowing into a busy street.

“We are the first responders who send a crew that can solve the problem,” said Weise. “If we can determine that it is something that needs immediate attention, such as the smell of gas, the technicians on call have the equipment to check the meter, check for leaks, and work on the meter.”

Each service area provided by LCU – water, gas, sewage and solid waste – has its own on-call team with the tools and equipment required for the operation.

“We also want to react as quickly as possible to water leaks, because a valuable resource is lost when water is lost,” says Weise. “We are the first point of contact to find a technician to access and allocate our resources.”

ERT also manages internal calls from field technicians who need help, for example in the form of location. If a technician can’t find where the water line is going or where the nearest pressure relief valve is, they can call ERT to send a locator with the tools and training to find underground utility lines.

Michelle Figueroa, Utilities Dispatch Supervisor, said, “The most helpful tool for residents is to log into the LCU notification system for notifications, which allows customers to know if there is a planned outage before calling ERT.” Report subscribe to notifications and update all old information for free at https://www.las-cruces.org/FormCenter/Utilities-11/Utility-Account-Contact-Information-Upda-137
