Leona Pearl Meek
June 19, 1936 – September 22, 2021
Leona Pearl (Heintz) Meek, a resident of Grand Junction, Colorado, died of natural causes in her home on September 22, 2021 in the loving presence of her family and friends.
Pearl was born on June 19, 1936 on her grandparents’ homestead in Great Divide, Colorado, to the middle daughter of George P. and Evelyn (Haltom) Heintz. She grew up in Craig, Colorado and attended school there, from which she graduated in 1954. She began her career as an accountant in her father’s plumbing and heating business and at Meek Brother’s Trucking, where she met her husband, Roy C. Meek. She moved with him to Virginia when he joined the US Navy in the early 1960s and has always been a support and partner in their success in their many years together. She stayed home to raise her children while helping run her trucking business and providing accounting services to other small businesses. She once kept books for over 30 small businesses in Cheyenne, Wyoming.
Creativity and caring for others always went hand in hand in everything she did. Her knitting and crochet hooks delighted her daughter, niece, granddaughter, and many others when Barbie doll clothes, animals, and fruits and vegetables began there. Knitted dolls were brought to life to bring smiles to friends, adults and children alike, all of their own creation – if she could see it in her head, she could knit it. She loved painting in oils and watercolor, and her paintings have won awards and been displayed in shops and homes. During her retirement years, she learned to play dobro and spent many winters jamming with retired musicians in the desert near Yuma, Arizona.
Pearl leaves behind her 62-year-old husband, Roy C. Meek of Grand Junction, Colorado; Daughter Rebecca (John) Stasko and granddaughter Alena-Irina Stasko from Ust-Ilimsk, Russia; Sister Fay (Almon) Durham of Farmington, New Mexico, and nieces and nephews.
Her father, George P. Heintz, preceded her in death; Mother, Evelyn (Haltom) Heintz; Sister Georgia Roys; Sons, George Paul and Claude Roy Meek, and five grandchildren.
A celebration of Pearl’s life will be held on October 9 at 1:00 p.m. at Latter-day Saint Church of Jesus Christ, 2949 Highway 50, Grand Junction, CO 81503.
