Locals respond to fatal movie set shooting near Santa Fe

SANTA FE, NM (KRQE) – The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s deputies were back on the set of Rust Friday to speak to additional witnesses and gather additional evidence. The film’s producer and star Alec Baldwin fired a prop gun, killing one and injuring another on the set at Bonanza Creek Ranch.

The set has been closed since the fatal incident on Thursday afternoon. The shooting shakes the New Mexico film scene. Baldwin shot a prop gun that killed 42-year-old Halyna Hutchins, the film’s camerawoman. Baldwin also hit and injured the film’s director, Joel Souza, who was brought to Christ St. Vincent.

According to a tweet from one of the film’s actresses, Frances Fisher, the director has been discharged from the hospital, but the Christ St. Vincent does not confirm it.

Local assistant prop master Aaron Aragon says there are thorough safety protocols in place when a gun is on set. While the gun is real, the ammunition normally used is not, but he says it can still be dangerous. “You will have gun smoke, you will have muzzle flash and flair from the explosion itself. So it’s a small explosion and can even be dangerous in itself, ”said Aragon.

Baldwin commented on Twitter on Friday. He says he is fully cooperating with the investigation. KRQE News 13 requested a comment from the New Mexico Film Office on the fatal shooting. The office shared the following statement on Friday:

The Santa Fe District Attorney’s Office issued the following statement on Friday:

“This case is still at the preliminary stage of investigation. We support and offer our full assistance to the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office. We do not currently know if any charges will be brought. We will examine all facts and evidence of the case with the utmost discretion and have further information at a later date. Our thoughts are affected by this tragedy for all of them. “
