Obituary of Lowell Kohlrust
Lowell Kohlrust passed away September 4 just shy of his 86th birthday. He is survived by his wife Janet of 61 years, his children Wayne and Tim, grandchildren of Paul, Tye, Calysta, Cecilia, Caryn, and TJ, and 14 Great Grandchildren.
Dad was preceded in death by his parents Roy and Ellen Kohlrust and brothers Donald and Russell.
Dad was born and raised in Chicago, went to grammar school at Bell School, then high school at Chicago Latin and graduated from Lake View High School. He then went on to Northwestern Univ where he earned a Chemical Engineering degree. Lowell worked at Kraft for 36 1/2 years and consulted for a few years after.
Following in his father’s footsteps Lowell was passionate about sports. After playing basketball in high school, he coached for many years at the YMCA in Chicago. Lowell grew up watching the Cubs and Bears at Wrigley Field. That only changed when the Bears moved to Soldier Field. He was an avid golfer who enjoyed playing with his kids. Lowell played in numerous bowling leagues around Chicago over the years. He also played in the Chicago 16 inch Softball League out of Wells Park for as long as we can remember. Lowell was a member of Bellpark Servicemen’s Club where held many leadership positions. Every year a stand-in for Santa Claus for the kids at Bellpark and then in NM where he played the role again at his grandson s Scout Pack where he would pass out gifts. Baseball being a passion of his, Lowell was a baseball coach to his children in little league and throughout High School. He also coached baseball at Dominican University in Illinois and Lincoln Middle School in NM.
Lowell was a long-time member of the DeMolay youth organization in Chicago. He was very active at Joyce Church in Chicago and Rio Rancho United Methodist Church here in NM. He became a lay speaker which allowed him to preach at different churches. For many years, Lowell taught adult Bible Studies, was a storyteller in costume during Vacation Bible School and played Nathaniel and Simon the Zealot in the Living Last Supper.
With all listed above he always had time for a catch, help with homework and just spending time playing board games or cards with us. He was a man who would give you the shirt off his back if needed, help fix your car or anything else that came up. We could always count on him when we needed someone.
A Celebration of Lowell’s life will be held Saturday, September 24 at 1:00 pm at Rio Rancho United Methodist Church at 1652 Abrazo Road NE in Rio Rancho. http://www.rrumc.net/
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Rio Rancho United Methodist Church to help support the youth for their mission trips.
