ALBUQUERQUE, NM (KRQE) – An Albuquerque woman caught a thief on camera in her garden, but he didn’t get off with anything, he was dragging a very heavy and expensive rock. The thief escaped from a homeowner’s backyard near San Mateo and Copper on Tuesday afternoon carrying quartz weighing at least 200 pounds.
“The person who took my report was incredulous that someone would actually wear a 200 pound crystal,” said Frances.
Frances’ back door is usually locked, but she left it open because PNM had to read the meter. On a surveillance video, you can see the thief opening the back gate and heading straight for the quartz crystal. Frances fears that somehow the thief already knew that the $ 1,500 crystal was on display.
Getting the stone was a goal of her late husband. “I was kind of happy, I granted him a wish even though he was no longer there,” said Frances.
The quartz pile was special to Frances and now the empty table is a painful reminder that the couple traversed the country in search of unique rocks. “We went to rock stores and saw what we could find, so that was always part of our road trips,” said Frances.
The thief left a trail of shards and Frances hopes he won’t damage it any further and has already told local collectors and buyers to keep an eye out. “Whoever took this beautiful earth treasure when you take it to a pawn shop will get noticed,” said Frances.
Frances filed a complaint with the police. If you recognize the man in the video, contact the Albuquerque Police Department.
