LAS CRUCES – Mayfield found his way back into the win column after a three-game losing skid.
In game one of the doubleheader on Friday at the Field of Dreams Baseball Complex, the Trojans took down Centennial 14-7.
Centennial came back to win the second game 14-2.
Mayfield improved to 5-3 in the District 3-5A standings while Centennial lost its first district game, dropping to 4-1.
The Hawks were the first to get on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning from an RBI line drive to left field from Jake Estep. Mayfield responded by putting up two runs of their own in the bottom half of the first.
The Trojans then went on to score four runs in the third inning and seven in the fourth, giving them a sizeable 13-2 lead. Mayfield, led by senior Adan Campos, went 3-for-4 at the plate along with two RBIs. Campos also pitched a complete game recording five strikeouts.
“I just went up to the plate and did my thing,” Campos said. “They have a great staff and great pitching, but I just had a great day at the plate.”
Centennial however, showed no quit, scoring four runs in the top of the fifth inning and one in the sixth, bringing the score within striking distance at 13-7. But Campos quickly shut the door after retiring the last three batters in a row to end the game.
“Our boys put it together,” Mayfield coach Rene Molenda said. “Great pitching by Campos yet again, and our boys put it together like they can.”
Molenda’s message for his team for the rest of the season is composed to stay.
“(The coaching staff) emphasize to the boys to be cool, calm and collected, and to play our game,” he said.

The Organ Mountain boys won the Las Cruces Invite on Friday at the Field of Dreams.
Centennial finished third and Las Cruces was fourth.
The Las Cruces girls finished second behind Alamogordo. Centennial was third, followed by Organ Mountain and Mayfield.
