Mobile Billboard Calls Out Biden’s Broken Climate Promises During Santa Fe Visit

SANTA FE, NM— Friends of the Earth, the Center for Biological Diversity and WildEarth Guardians will display a mobile billboard Saturday during President Biden’s visit to Santa Fe, criticizing the administration for its broken promises to end oil and gas leasing on public lands and waters . Biden will receive an update on the historic wildfires that have burned nearly 500 square miles of New Mexico.

The Biden administration has so far broken its campaign promise to end new drilling. It held the largest ever offshore lease sale in the Gulf of Mexico, which was later overturned by the courts, and this month plans to auction nearly 150,000 acres of public lands in eight states, including New Mexico.

“President Biden claims he is a climate leader, but his failure to address the nearly 25% percent of US climate emissions from the fossil fuel leasing program says otherwise,” said Raena Garcia, fossil fuels and lands campaigner at Friends of the Earth. “The wildfires in New Mexico are just the latest example of catastrophic climate change. We need real leadership from Biden to turn the tide on climate change, and that starts with keeping his promise to end new oil and gas leasing on public lands and waters.”

“While the president gets an update on the largest wildfire in New Mexico history he’s adding fuel by approving more fracking in the Permian Basin,” said Taylor McKinnon with the Center for Biological Diversity. “We’re witnessing catastrophic climate change and Biden can turn things around by ending new fossil fuel extraction on public lands. With each new oil lease the administration is choosing more megafires, worsening drought, increasing temperatures and more extinctions. The president needs to keep his climate promise and use his power to end federal fossil fuel leasing.”
