Ledes from the Land of Enchantment

My Favorite Airbnb: An Adobe Casita in the Heart of Santa Fe

The spaces were ample—there was a driveway where we could park our rental car (a Turo picked up at the Albuquerque airport), an enclosed front yard with a dining table and sun chairs, a side yard with more seating, a living room with a fireplace, a dining room and full kitchen, two king bedrooms, and two full bathrooms. The capacity listed on Airbnb is for five people, which suggests the sofa bed sleeps one guest. We didn’t open it because the beds were massive enough for us to comfortably fit two people in one of them and three in the other—(a perk that comes from traveling with the women you grew up with and prefer to be two inches from at all times). The house would very comfortably fit a group of four.

This adobe home sits in a neighborhood that’s full of them.

The property is operated by a rental management company called Two Casitas. Sometimes I’m turned off by that; I’m on Airbnb to rent from an individual host I can chat with, right? But Two Casitas is making me reconsider that stance. They had everything from the check-in process (sent by text on the day of arrival) to the restaurant recommendations pasted to the fridge (a lengthy list of winners including the unmissable Tia Sophia’s and Sazón) on lock. The kitchen was also stocked with essentials like coffee, sugar, creamer, and basic cooking supplies like olive oil, and they even thought to put out a bottle of wine, with chips and locally made salsa, for our arrival. We took care of those immediately.

Best of all, there were personal touches that reminded me I was in somebody’s home, like an incredible collection of books about New Mexico in the master bedroom with little handwritten tags labeling sections like, “New Mexico History/Essays.” (I really loved reading about local Indigenous origin stories in one paperback.) Another was a note by the front door letting guests know that sometimes the cat from across the street pokes around the front yard.
