August 30, 2021 – ABQ BioPark fans are invited to help name the new baby hippopotamus in the zoo.
The New Mexico BioPark Society and sponsor Albuquerque Santa Fe Toyota Dealer are holding a hippopotamus naming contest as they raise funds for the zoo’s hippo family. This donation-to-vote naming contest is public, and guests are invited as often as they want to donate any amount for their favorite hippopotamus name. The name of the hippo that brings in the most money is the winner.
From a list of over 2,600 names submitted during the first part of the competition, the Hippo Care team selected these last four names: Zia, Magdalena, Layla, Sienna.
From Monday, August 30th, fans of all ages can donate any amount in person or online (info below). The competition ends on Friday, September 10th.

Karen, a 19-year-old Nile hippopotamus, gave birth to the healthy girl on Monday, July 19, 2021. This is her third calf with 47 year old Moe.
