New Mexico man wanted after a woman disappeared in Nevada

A New Mexico man identified as someone of interest in his girlfriend’s disappearance and possible killing in recent weeks was arrested in Nevada days after the woman was reported missing by her family.

Following the disappearance of 59-year-old Cecilia Barbara Finona, reported June 1, Farmington Police Department investigators determined that her boyfriend Jerry Jay was likely to be in the area in his 2016 white Ford F-150 with New Mexico license plate 221RSM Fled from Farmington to southern Nevada.

Farmington is in the northwest corner of New Mexico, near the Arizona, Utah, and Colorado borders.

Days later the police got a hit: Jay had used an ATM in Las Vegas on June 1st.

On June 4, according to the Department, he was arrested somewhere in Nevada on an arrest warrant from the Farmington Police Department for illegally withdrawing from a financial institution. Farmington police spokeswoman Georgette Allen did not reveal any further details Thursday, including the arrest of the 57-year-old man.

Finona was still missing Thursday and law enforcement agencies in both states want answers.

In a statement to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Farmington Police Chief Steve Hebbe said his department “is very concerned about the safety of Cecilia Finona”.

“Based on Jerry Jay’s actions to date, we believe that in this case he has an interest and information that is extremely important to your safe return,” said Hebbe.

Meanwhile, Metropolitan Homicide Investigator Todd Katowich said his team was looking for information or surveillance photos or videos of Jay while he was in Nevada.

Investigators believe Jay died between May 31, the last time Finona was seen by her family, and May 4.

Finona is 1.70 m tall and weighs about 150 pounds. She has brown hair and eyes and sometimes wears glasses.

This story has been updated to correct the name of the person of interest after Metro initially provided the incorrect identification.
