New Mexico State Volleyball Caps Senior Day with WAC Regular Season title

LAS CRUCES, New Mexico – New Mexico state volleyball seniors may have received a longer Senior Day celebration than they expected on Saturday.

But they certainly deserved the celebration that followed their WAC title win over the state of Chicago at the Pan-American Center.

Katie Bircil led the Aggies with 19 kills while Seniors Cat Kelly and Shaney Lipscomb added 15 and 13 kills, respectively, to give the Aggies a 21-25, 25-17, 25-19, 25-15 win over the Cougars to lead.

Saturday’s game was delayed by about an hour as officials were present at the time of the start.

And when the game finally started, Chicago State came out and surprised the home team with a first set win.

But in the second set the Aggies took control and never looked back.

Birtcil’s six kills in the second set the stage for the Aggies, while Lipscomb got four and Kelly got three.

NMSU finished the last two sets to give the Aggies their eighth WAC title of the regular season.

Starting Thursday, NM State will host the WAC tournament. The Aggies are number 2 and will play at the Pan American Center at 7pm.
