New Mexico Supreme Court justices attend Las Cruces Academy

By Vince Gutschick, Ph.D. Las Cruces Academy

Las Cruces Academy was blessed on September 16 with the visit of three Justices from the New Mexico Supreme Court while Justices Shannon Bacon, Julie Vargas and Briana Zamora attended the school.

The judges answered questions from 24 students in grades 3 to 8 when judges, students and teachers gathered in the open air in the schoolyard.

Students asked how to become a lawyer, judge, and judge; which cases were the most difficult to decide; who represents a person who is dying; How do judges interpret laws passed by the legislature that have some ambiguities; cooperate with the governor (prudently to preserve the independence of the branches of government); there will be a vaccination mandate; why they chose to serve in New Mexico rather than other opportunities (they are all New Mexico native and love serving our fellow citizens); How many Supreme Courts are there, and do they ever meet to learn how each one operates? how do cases get to the Supreme Court; when did you decide in your life to work as a lawyer; how legal opportunities arose for women and other groups; and many more inquiries.

The judges and students showed mutual admiration.

The academy has to thank mother Mollie McGraw for creating the occasion.

Las Cruces Academy has 46 students in classes from early kindergarten through 8th grade. The academy is a not-for-profit private school now in its 13th year offering courses with a comprehensive curriculum in languages (English, Spanish, Chinese), science, math, social studies, arts, music, computer programming, world culture, physical education and specialization courses, as well as extracurricular clubs in technology, theater and mathematics.
