New Mexico winter weather: Strong winds, heavy snow

Strong winds, heavy snow and difficult travel conditions have prompted Monday to be a weather alert day. Winter storm warnings, winter weather advisories, and high wind warnings have been issued for different parts of New Mexico. Here’s what you need to know. Winter storm warningA winter storm warning has been issued for parts of Bernalillo County (east of Albuquerque), Torrance County, Guadalupe County, De Baca County, Quay County, Curry County and Roosevelt County until noon on Tuesday. Heavy snow is expected across the area under a winter storm warning. Most areas can expect to see 3 to 6 inches of snow. 6 to 8 inches can be expected in eastern Lincoln County and southwest Guadalupe County. Travel could become very difficult on Interstate 40 and US Highways 54, 60, 70, 84 and 285 in eastern and central New Mexico. Winds gusting as high as 35 miles per hour are also expected in areas under a winter storm warning. High Wind Warning and wind advisoryA high wind warning has been issued for the Middle Rio Grande Valley to include Albuquerque until midnight tonight. East canyon winds between 25 and 35 miles per hour are expected throughout Albuquerque metro today with some gusts reaching 60 miles per hour. Strong and damaging winds could blow down trees and powerlines in the metro. Power outages can be expected if power lines fall. Travel will be difficult on I-25 and I-40 throughout the day. A wind advisory has been issued for the Santa Fe metro area until 8:00 pm Monday evening. Winds between 25 and 35 mph can be expected with gusts blowing to 45 mph. Gusty winds could cause tree limbs to be blown down and could cause difficult travel on roadways with crosswinds. Strong winds and blowing dust have also prompted officials in Bernalillo County to issue a health alert.
