New Teen Center Aims To Serve Low-Income Kids On Santa Fe’s Southside

A new space is being built on Santa Fe’s southside specially made for teenagers – and no, it’s not a bowling alley.

Jacob Abeyta is with the Santa Fe Boys and Girls Club

“The south side of Santa Fe doesn’t really have a lot of resources for teenagers,” Abeyta said. “But this is the part of town our teenagers live in these days.”

He said that increasing gentrification and the rising cost of living in the city of Santa Feans are pushing out of their homes. And that’s exactly why the Santa Fe Boys and Girls Club is curating a space that offers free food, entertainment, tutoring, and other services in one place where kids need community most.

Located in a converted retail store on Santa Fe Place Mall, Abeyta tells me this center is part of a project that has been in the works for 4 years.

And the best part about it?

The youth center has teamed up with EA Sports to build a play area in the hopes of turning the center into something of a play center for children in the area.

It’s not entirely clear when the teen center will officially open, but Abeyta tells me the date will definitely be before Halloween at the end of this month.

For everyone who wants to see the room, there will be a soft opening on Friday, October 22nd, from 4pm to 6pm.
