New water sports center planned for NE Albuquerque Park

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – Plans for a new community pool in northeast Albuquerque are finally moving forward.

The city wants to set up a new water sports center in North Domingo Baca Park. A long awaited project that has been a goal for almost 20 years.

“So this should be a signal for the future, but also give elementary school children and also small children who cannot even go into the water in this part of the city in the summer to cool down,” says Tim Keller, Mayor of Albuquerque.

There are four renders for the future water center, valued at $ 12 million to $ 13 million, that include various indoor and outdoor pool layouts.

“It’s going to be an amazing project for the city that will last for generations and be a very, very important improvement in the quality of life in our community,” said Dave Simon, director of Parks and Recreation.

The city is still working on funding the new water center and already has around $ 7 million. They said that depending on how things go, construction could start as early as 2023.

“Most importantly, the residents of our community now see that this is gaining traction,” said Brooke Basson, councilor.
