NM State from Lobos. stumbled

Press release of the NMSU Athletics

New Mexico state football held a 3-1 competition in the Battle of I-25 at the Soccer Athletic Complex on Thursday night.

The Lobos (5-2, 0-0 MWC) came out of the gate aggressively and finished in the 10th. Xitlaly Hernandez had a chance to equalize, but her missile from the left side of the 18-meter area was stopped by UNM keeper Emily Johnson in the 13th minute.

NM State continued to fall back after a UNM goal in the 28th minute. Corey Kizer had a great chance in the 34th, but her header sailed just over the bar and the Aggies went 2-0 down into half-time.

The Aggies controlled possession in the second half, but the Lobos extended their lead to 3-0 in the 66th minute. Megan Ormson scored after a Gia Valenti header for NM State in the 76th minute, but that was the only goal the Aggies scored when they fell 3-1.

As a team, NM State was beaten 12:10 but had six shots on goal to the Lobos’ five.

The Aggies now have Gonzaga in their sights as the Zags visit the Soccer Athletic Complex at 1pm (MT) on Sunday, September 19. Fans can stream all the action live on the WAC Digital Network.
