NMiF addresses voting reform proposals, governor’s push for hydrogen and proposed tax law changes: UNM Newsroom

This week on New Mexico in Focus, we take a critical look at two key issues that are drawing attention in state legislation, where lawmakers are considering changes to voting rights and tax laws.

Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver explains why her office is calling for electoral reform ahead of the 2022 election cycle during her meeting with correspondent Gwenyth Doland. And Richard Anklam of the New Mexico Tax Research Institute tells us whether the governor’s proposed tax cuts will have a tangible impact on the lives of New Mexicans.

The Line Opinion Panel is weighing these proposed electoral reforms, including a proposal to allow 16-year-olds to vote in some municipal elections. Panelists will also discuss Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s renewed push for hydrogen energy and the recently promulgated Hydrogen Hub Development Act. Also, how are each party approaching the upcoming elections? The panel is examining some of the recent maneuvers by both parties, including the GOP’s challenge against the state’s new political districts.

New Mexico in Focus will air Friday, January 28 at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, January 30 at 7:00 a.m. on NMPBS 5.1 (KNME HD) and stream via the PBS Video app.
