Ledes from the Land of Enchantment

NMiF reviews Albuquerque action on homeless camps and understanding alcohol’s impact in New Mexico: UNM Newsroom

This week on New Mexico in Focus, the Line Opinion Panel discusses recent action from the Albuquerque City Council that would stop the creation of any new homeless encampments in the city. How does this fit with Mayor Tim Keller’s plan to address this issue?

There are new concerns about media access following Republican nominee Mark Ronchetti’s latest rally in the race for governor.

The panel also explores possible uses for a historic state surplus, thanks to booming oil and gas revenues.

In collaboration with New Mexico In Depth, Gene Grant hosts a roundtable discussion about the impacts of alcohol in our state. Journalist Ted Alcorn explains his findings in a 7-part series that focuses on our death rate that currently leads the US, as well as drunk driving, alcohol’s impact on violent crime, myths when it comes to who carries the burden of this problem, failings in our state’s public policy, and the overarching issue of addiction and how it’s treated.

Correspondent Antonia Gonzales previews the 100th Santa Fe Indian Market. She speaks with the executive director of the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts (SWAIA), and an artist about what this year’s event means to artists after a pandemic hiatus.

New Mexico in Focus airs on NMPBS 5.1 (KNME HD) Friday, Aug. 19 at 7 pm and Sunday, Aug. 21 at 7 am, and streaming on the PBS video app.
