NSSF Area Managers Launch Project ChildSafe Albuquerque Firearms Safety Initiative – Albuquerque City

The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), Albuquerque City Councilors Bach Bassan and Klarissa Peña, representative of Albuquerque Public schools, the New Mexico State Police, the New Mexico Department of Game & Fish, and the Albuquerque Police Department – along with local firearms dealers and training organizations – launched Project ChildSafe® Albuquerque across the city to prevent and provide relief from gun accidents in suicide prevention.

“We are launching the ChildSafe Albuquerque project with the aim of reducing firearm accidents, theft, suicide and child firearm abuse,” said Joe Bartozzi, President and CEO of NSSF and Chairman of the Project ChildSafe Foundation. “At the heart of all of this is the goal of encouraging gun owners to store their guns responsibly. We know that safe and responsible weapon storage works and helps save lives. “

NSSF and its local partners provide the community with hundreds of free gun locks and a library of educational materials on firearms safety at home. The NSSF will highlight firearms safety messages and remind gun owners in Albuquerque that a hidden gun is not a safely kept gun through an ongoing digital advertising campaign.

NSSF provides the free locks and resources through its Project ChildSafe initiative, which has distributed more than 40 million free gun locks through partnerships with thousands of law enforcement agencies across the country.

The citywide initiative will also focus on suicide prevention by offering residents a free resource parenting guide developed by the NSSF in consultation with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. As the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated mental health problems, especially among adolescents, it is important for gun owners to understand the mental health risks and warning signs of suicide – as well as proper gun storage practices in order to gain access to a potential method of self-determination to prevent damage.

The free guide can help parents spot signs that their children are struggling with mental health problems and offers advice on how to talk to children about suicide and make their homes safer for those who may be at risk.

“We want to provide parents with resources and tips on how to talk to their children about mental health and take steps to secure firearms and other potentially lethal means,” said Councilor Bassan. “Safe gun storage is an important way to create a vital ‘break’ that can save lives.”

Proper firearms storage can also help make communities safer by preventing guns from being stolen and used in crimes.

“It is important that we share these tools and information with our communities to prevent tragedy,” said Peña City Councilor. “It’s been an honor to work with my fellow Councilor Bassan, NSSF, APD and APS to distribute the gun locks – but most importantly, working with families and connecting them with resources to prevent suicide.”

“In recent years, fatal firearms accidents have dropped to historic lows thanks to partnerships like this one, and this trend is set to continue in the right direction,” said Bartozzi. “It starts with a shared responsibility and emphasis on gun safety. We are grateful to Councilors Bassan and Peña and all of our local partners for joining us in this effort.”

About the ChildSafe project

NSSF, the trade association for the firearms industry, launched Project ChildSafe (originally Project HomeSafe) in 1999. Since 1999, through partnerships with thousands of law enforcement agencies across the country, the program has provided more than 40 million free gun safety kits and locks to gun owners in all 50 states. This is on top of the more than 70 million free locks manufacturers have sold with new firearms since 1998 and continue to do so. While a focus is on preventing accidents in children, the ChildSafe project aims to help adults practice more gun safety in the home. Further information is available at projektchildsafe.org.
