LAS CRUCES – Two Democrats and two Republicans are vying to be the next Doña Ana County sheriff and one has raised considerably more money than their opponents.
According to campaign finance records, Democratic challenger and former State Police Captain James Freitze raised $49,055.37 since the race began. His total dwarfs that of incumbent Sheriff Kim Stewart almost fivefold. Most of Freitze’s donations (about $34,000) have come from Las Cruces, records show. Stewart raised $10,477.42. Most of Stewart’s contributions have also come from Las Cruces.
Freitze’s nearest fundraising rival is Republican Byron Hollister. A former US marshal, Hollister has raised $27,626.22. Most of his money (about $18,000) has come from Las Cruces. Hollister has collected about $3,700 from his home state of California.
Next in the fundraising line is Omar Chavez. The former El Paso sheriff’s deputy turned police consultant has raised $25,993.45. Unlike the other candidates, Chavez’s donations have come from all over, but donations from El Paso make up the largest location.
