A day that changed everything, Albuquerque’s Civic Plaza is remembered all over again.
“We must maintain this level of respect and never forget that the victims were lost in this attack,” said Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham.
Families, military personnel and other citizens gathered to honor the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives on that tragic day.
“It was a day that should break us. But it was the courage and selflessness of our first responders that so clearly and immediately affirmed the strength of our nation, “said Mayor Tim Keller. It is important to explain what all of this means for America and the United States for us individually.”
Each of the names shown during the ceremony were tagged with 343 pieces of firefighters’ emergency equipment that were placed nearby to honor the first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice.
As much as it was about never forgetting today, it was also about looking to the future.
“My son-in-law happens to be in the academy, so we came here to honor the people who sacrificed and to honor my son who is now in the academy.”
For Michelle Cunningham, it was this unfathomable tragedy that forced her son to become a firefighter.
“He was probably in third grade when it happened, ever since he knew he wanted to be a firefighter.”
We know, no matter how much time passes, what happened on September 11, 2001 will always be remembered.
